The reasons why people marry are far untold. It ranges from a host of many things. However, central to it is a need for a better life. I will rather say gone are the days when people used to marry solely for love than say the days when the singular reason for marriage was love, is now in a state of oblivion. This is because I know that the power of love is not only irrepressible, but also conquering. Consequently, some still chase the “happily ever after” motivated wholly by love.

It is also understandable why there has been a paradigm shift from the ethos upon which marriage was built, to the farce we have gradually turned it into now; due largely to the immense needs of the world. Nowadays, there are many bills to pay, many social events to attend, a need to meet up with the trends, essential needs like food, shelter and clothing are not only expensive but also abundant, and the new order created by the world is class – accentuating inequality among human leaving the unprincipled with a mountain to climb.

Therefore, marriage for most is bigger than just companionship. It is a contractual agreement to be more than ordinary, an access to fulfilling needs. Many people have various reasons influencing their choice of whom to marry, which often are not guided by love, friendship and companionship or they have their judgements drawn from imprecise, sentimental, venal reasons as long as it benefits their greedy motives.

It is worthy of note that no one has the prerogative to adjudicate over the reasons of anyone over any matter, marriage inclusive. It is clear that perception and evaluation are never objective but subjective especially when it comes to issues that affect an individual. As much as we all consider the obvious rationale behind it, it might be far reaching than what meets the eyes. Consequently, I will only be attempting to evaluate the core reasons why people marry foreigners and these are my thoughts after finding these reasons I will be discussing as identical to those who seek such marriage.

Just like most of us who marry to better our lots even when our partners are not foreigners, so also do people who marry foreigners do so to become financially empowered? There is a myth that most people from financially strong countries with solid economy, social welfare, and proper way of life with indexes as life expectancy, health facilities, to mention a few, have more viable source of income. These puts them at a vantage point over those in the developing environments, which limits the opportunity to break even and empower one to achieving the capacity to succeed.

Many a time, people want the opportunity to explore a different environment, country, culture, and people as a whole but are handicapped from doing this by boarders, laws, resources, and wherewithal. As a result, they marry someone who can give them this opening. Other times, they fall in love with the way of life of a given people, their food, way of dressing, and the country itself. Hence, once someone offers them this chance, they embrace it with gratitude.

In certain cases, people marry people from foreign land based on cultural approbation of those types of people. Many have come in contact indirectly with their way of life either through books, documentaries, movies or sometimes directly by meeting someone of that tribe making them fall in love with their way of life and desiring to become a part of it through marriage.

For many also, they marry foreigner based on the opportunity of living in a very different weather than theirs. They desire to live in more tropical regions, temperate or freezing region. Therefore, the climate and weather conditions are a motivation for them.

There is no doubting the fact that many especially Africans, marry people of other countries as a means of escape from various traditions, cultures, betrothal, and rites to be with someone they truly love.

For others, it just happens to them by chance not by any means of painstaking plan to achieving it. It is just providence; they simply fall in love and settle with that individual. It is more like the Aladdin story for them; never knowing it is the princess in disguise.

There a chunk of people who are migrants to other lands whether as students, workers, tourists, or visitors. While they are resident at those lands, they soon make friends; fall and stay in love, then get married to a foreigner.

Yours truly,
